- Heidi Smith
- Hi, my name is Heidi, I'm a freelance character designer, illustrator, and visual development artist who graduated from the character animation program at the California Institute of the Arts in 2008. I was the character designer and conceptual designer for ParaNorman, and I won an Annie award for my designs in 2013. In 2017, I illustrated my very first picture book, Lovely Beasts: The Surprising Truth, which won the Bull-Bransom Award in 2019 for excellence in the field of children's book illustration with a focus on nature and wildlife. I have also worked as a character designer for Henry Selick at Cinderbiter, The Jim Henson Company, DreamWorks Animation, Warner Brothers Animation, and Sony Pictures Animation. I'm obsessed with music, I love just about everything (except contemporary country music!!!) You'll usually find me either drawing, sleeping, or singing obnoxiously while showering at 3 am, that sums me up quite nicely! All original artwork copyright Heidi Smith 2024. Hi Heidi,
My 5 yr old son is obsessed w ParaNorman.
So much so that he finished his 1st chapter book (the paranorman movie novel), has a poster over his bed, and talks to everyone he meets (waiters, cashiers, random guy walking down the street) if they've seen the new ParaNorman commercial on the Olympics.

fantastic work! Congrats on Paranorman.
Great work I really love your style. I read your interview on character design artist interviews and there was something that you said that really explained the drawing technique I use where you said that you have to constantly walk away from your work to go back with a fresh perspective, since you have so many ideas. Its nice to now know that someone else does this and its not just me :)
